Who we are

The Bristol School of Writing is a space for writers in Bristol and the South West to publish, read each other, and meet in person and online. A space to learn together. Find us on Facebook as The Bristol School of Writing.

We create books and e-books of new writing, with a focus on stories, poems and essays: both fiction and non-fiction. We are regional, but also universal in our interests.

We run events around our books, with talks by established writers, as well as readings and discussions.

A “school” in several senses, we are like a school of fish, and also promote writing that embodies our guiding values: clarity, wisdom, laughter.

We think the best writing expands the consciousness of the reader, opens new perspectives that enable a richer, deeper experience of life. Interesting characters, important themes, nuanced thought and feeling embodied in living images. Clear, sensuous language.

We call our strategic concept “universal regionalism”, and connect with important partner organisations in different domains, from writing groups to universities, think tanks, art galleries and more. See our Partners page.

We provide written feedback to every writer who shares their work with us. Some are then selected for publication.

Why not check out our Collections page, and buy a collection that includes strong writing followed by insightful literary analysis. What does the piece say? How does it say it? What are its effects? And what do you think?  What inspires you?

You can also visit our Submissions page, choose from the nine themes for future books, and share your work with us…
